About Us

About Us

The organization Urban Poets started as an open mic event in 2019 to raise awareness about poverty issues and homelessness in Atlanta. We decided to start a nonprofit to enrich our community and ensure our efforts are more impactful. Our events are free, but we ask people to bring donations for people without shelter. Urban Poets host events in metro cities promoting art, music, and literature. The events we host are poetry open mics, live music concerts, and music producer showcases.

During our events we ask for donations like toiletries to go towards helping displaced citizens. We want to improve the conditions for people facing displacement by providing shelter and common necessities. Our goal is to raise $250,000 within two years of fundraising to help purchase a community Arts Center that will act as an emergency shelter at night.

Community Impact

Our art events bring more diversity to metro areas. We first started curating events in the heart of metro Atlanta near Georgia State downtown campus. We noticed that many students in the area did not have a place to share their creativity and express themselves, so we decided to create a safe space for artists. Our intentions were also to connect artists with the local community, so we decided to partner with local businesses to host free events at their venue space. Our events allow people who normally wouldn’t be heard the opportunity to feel a part of a community. We have had artists from all walks of life perform at our events because we eliminate any barriers. We keep our events free and accessible to the public. We also support the local business economy by increasing their customer base and promoting the area.

Our art events also help people that are displaced because we ask our guests to bring donations. We ask for items like toiletries, blankets, and women hygiene products. The events we host help raise awareness of homelessness and provide common necessities to people in metro Atlanta that need help. After our events, we distribute food and drinks bought with the monetary donations we received during the events, along with the toiletries and other donations we received. We offer students living in metro areas free workshops and programs to help support literacy and increase exposure to new technology and art. We connect local industry professionals with high school students to facilitate hands-on learning and mentorship. We also connect the community by providing a space for positive social networking and peer-to-peer learning.
